I've Known Days

Not the best of days,
nor best of eve'nings;
not the worst of either,
though. For I've known days
far grayer, duller, grimmer,
days of black and sorrow
that, comparing now,
reveal a day and evening
more acceptable,
less harrowing,
than what it felt like
in the midst of momentary
trials and disappointments.
And too, there are some
close to me whose day
was full of black and sorrow,
but who hope that as
the sun begins to show,
their faces will remember
how to smile.
