A Sort of Sacrifice, Remembered

The priest is celebrating close to twenty years
since taking vows, and mentions it at Mass,
encouraging the young men there to act upon
their dreams (if such dreams there be) : entry
into holy, consecrated separation from the world
and all the things that make up ordinary
life. He fell in love, he said, surprising me,
and kindly saying that the girl was beautiful,
but it was not so strong a love to woo him
from the call of God. And as I sat and watched
him speak, how animated, gentle smile that
bore the weight of close to twenty years of solitude,
I thought about the lovely girl who lost her
heart but couldn't keep the man. I hope she
found another, found a love to hold her
in the night when God seems far away.
