Off Book

Someone's marked-up script.
I highlight my lines in yellow,
cue lines in, say, blue, and direction
in green or pink. Makes it
easier for my puny
brain to keep up.
Lines are studied, memorized, the cues from
fellow actors and directions marked in
different colors, learned as well to know
just when to jump in with an apt reply.
The play's the thing, but life would be much
simpler if we all knew what to say and when,
if character and plot synopses for our journeys
were available on our fellow actors, if we
could but listen to the notes from the director
after each rehearsal,  make improvements,
sell the part, entice the audience.
