Spotlight: Off

You sing your heart out at audition,
sweet news that you've been cast,
librettos handed out and songs assigned.
Months of learning lyrics, choose
a sparkly dress to wear onstage,
get to know new people, catch up
with the others between numbers,
opening, first weekend gone, then
second, and before you know it,
counting down to that last show.
Strike the set, cast party, toasts
and hugs and food to celebrate.
Tomorrow you'll begin adjusting
to the extra time you have, the let down
now that no one will applaud
more ordinary things you say and do,
no follow spot. The music, though,
that never fades.
