Broken

They say that bones once broken
mend yet stronger, so perhaps the cup
I glued today will be like that.
I'd rather that it hadn't broken, though, at all.
Broken friendships, broken people,
are not often mended quite as easily,
more fragile now, less trust inclined
their way. The strengthening is possible,
that's not to say it isn't. But it's much
more difficult to put the pieces back
together, and a scar is almost always left,
a visible reminder: Warning! There is
damage here. Be careful, please. Just treat
me gently and respect the weakness merely
to insure the breakage doesn't happen once again.
